Discover more about Tista Barrage

The Tista Barrage is a vital engineering project situated on the Teesta River in the Lalmonirhat district of Bangladesh. Specifically, it's located in Duani Union, under Hatibandha Upazila. The barrage stretches 615 meters in length and is constructed of concrete, featuring 44 radial gates. It has a discharge capacity of 12,750 cusec. The primary purpose of the Tista Barrage is to divert water for irrigation, serving the northern regions of Rangpur, Dinajpur, and Bogra. The initial plan for the barrage was conceived in 1937, with construction commencing in 1979 and concluding in 1998. The barrage was officially inaugurated by President H.M Ershad. Beyond its functional role, the Tista Barrage has emerged as a popular tourist spot. Visitors can enjoy boat rides on the river and relax in the park adjacent to the barrage. The area provides a soothing environment for picnics and family outings. Bird watching is another common activity, especially between November and February when migratory birds flock to the area. The দৃশ্য of the deep blue/green water, combined with the surrounding landscape, offers a refreshing escape. However, the barrage faces challenges, including declining water flow in the Teesta River due to upstream diversions and climate change. This has raised concerns about the project's long-term sustainability and regional water security.
