Dewanbari: Echoes of Zamindari Rangpur

Dewanbari, situated in the heart of Rangpur, stands as a testament to the bygone era of the zamindars (landlords) in Bengal. This historical site, once the residence of the prominent Majumdar family, offers visitors a unique window into the lives and times of the landed aristocracy who shaped the region's social and economic landscape. The founder of Dewanbari was Fonivuson Majumdar, born in 1892 to Radharomon, a local landlord, and Kusum Kumari Devi. The Majumdar family played a significant role in the area, and their residence, Dewanbari, reflected their status and influence. The two-story building, though modest in size, features an imposing Mughal-style entrance gate, complete with gatekeepers' rooms on either side, hinting at the grandeur that once characterized the estate. Over the years, Dewanbari has witnessed significant changes. Following the abolishment of real estate practices in 1952, the estate was auctioned off, marking the end of the Majumdar family's direct control. Today, the building serves a different purpose, housing a school and various business centers.
