The Boro Sona Masjid, meaning 'Great Golden Mosque,' stands as the largest monument in Gour, a testament to the city's former glory as a major political and cultural center. The mosque's design reflects a unique blend of Indo-Arabic architectural styles, characterized by its imposing structure and intricate stone carvings. The construction was initiated by Sultan Alauddin Husain Shah and completed by his son, Nasiruddin Nasrat Shah. The mosque, also known as Baroduari Masjid (the Mosque with 12 Doors), features eleven arched entrances on its eastern facade. Measuring approximately 50.4 meters by 22.8 meters and reaching a height of 12 meters, the Boro Sona Masjid is an impressive structure. Once the surface and roofs of the mosque were gilded, giving it a shining, golden appearance. The prayer hall is divided into three aisles with eleven bays each. The hall is supported by massive rectangular columns, and the walls are adorned with carvings and decorative elements. The western wall features a mihrab opposite each bay, indicating the direction of Mecca. The mosque also includes two buttresses, four corner towers, and a spacious courtyard. Throughout its history, the Boro Sona Masjid has undergone periods of both glory and decline. During the Sultanate period, it served as a major center of worship and a symbol of the region's prosperity. Today, the Boro Sona Masjid stands as a partially ruined monument.
