Discover more about Ragged Point

Ragged Point, situated in the parish of St. Philip, marks the easternmost point of Barbados, presenting visitors with a dramatic and unforgettable coastal experience. The name 'Ragged Point' aptly describes the location, characterized by rugged cliffs sculpted by the relentless Atlantic waves. Here, the raw power of nature is on full display, contrasting with the calmer west coast of the island. The East Point Lighthouse, also known as Ragged Point Lighthouse, stands proudly atop the cliffs. Constructed in 1875 from coral stone, the 85-foot structure once served as a vital beacon for ships navigating the treacherous Cobbler's Reef. While the lighthouse isn't open to the public, it remains a striking landmark and a reminder of Barbados' maritime past. The Barbados Port Inc. is supporting the restoration of the lighthouse to maintain it as one of Barbados' premier tourist attractions. Visitors to Ragged Point are immediately captivated by the panoramic views. On a clear day, the entire east coast unfolds, stretching as far north as Pico Tenerife and Cove Bay. The rugged coastline, crashing waves, and the endless expanse of the Atlantic create a sense of awe. The constant trade winds provide a refreshing breeze, making it a perfect spot to escape the heat. Swimming is not recommended at Ragged Point due to strong currents and the rocky shoreline. However, walking trails wind along the clifftops, providing opportunities to explore the unique flora and fauna of this coastal environment. Birdwatchers can spot local species, while nature lovers appreciate the diverse plant life adapted to the salty air. Nearby, the village of Marley Vale offers a glimpse into local Barbadian life. For those seeking a more secluded beach experience, a short drive south leads to Bottom Bay, a picturesque cove sheltered by cliffs. Further along the coast, Cave Bay, Long Bay and Foul Bay offer additional options for sunbathing and relaxation. At low tide, adventurous visitors can walk to Culpepper Island, a tiny islet just offshore.
