Discover more about George Washington House

George Washington House, nestled in the historic Garrison area of Bridgetown, Barbados, offers a unique glimpse into the life of the future first U.S. President. This beautifully restored 18th-century mansion is the only residence outside the continental United States where George Washington resided. In 1751, a 19-year-old George Washington accompanied his half-brother Lawrence to Barbados, seeking a remedy for Lawrence's tuberculosis. Their two-month stay at what was then known as Bush Hill House profoundly impacted young Washington, exposing him to the island's military defenses, diverse culture, and plantation economy.Today, visitors can explore the period-furnished rooms on the ground floor, providing an immersive experience of 18th-century Barbadian life. The upper floor houses an interactive museum that delves into the rich cultural heritage of the island during the 17th and 18th centuries, a time when Barbados was one of the wealthiest countries in the hemisphere. The museum also examines the history of slavery that shaped plantation life in the Caribbean and the southern USA. A highlight of the visit is the opportunity to explore a section of the historic Garrison Tunnels, which are accessible from the house. Originally conceived as drainage, these tunnels were later developed into an underground escape system for the British military. Visitors can venture 200 feet into the subterranean corridor and imagine the activities that once took place within these hidden passageways. The site also features a small air-conditioned cinema showing a 16-minute docudrama about George Washington's visit. Allow several hours to fully explore this remarkable piece of shared American and Barbadian heritage.
