The first known owner was Ferdinand Paleologus, a descendant of the last Byzantine Emperor, Constantine XI, who is buried at the nearby St. John's Parish Church.Over the centuries, Clifton Hall evolved from a modest plantation house into a grand estate, reflecting the changing fortunes of its owners and the island's economy. In 1810, General Robert Haynes expanded the property to 365 acres, establishing it as a thriving sugar plantation.
