Clifton Hall Great House: A Step Back in Time

Clifton Hall Great House offers a captivating journey into Barbados' colonial past. Established in 1656, the estate's history is interwoven with the island's sugar production and colonial governance. The first known owner was Ferdinand Paleologus, a descendant of the last Byzantine Emperor, Constantine XI, who is buried at the nearby St. John's Parish Church.Over the centuries, Clifton Hall evolved from a modest plantation house into a grand estate, reflecting the changing fortunes of its owners and the island's economy. In 1810, General Robert Haynes expanded the property to 365 acres, establishing it as a thriving sugar plantation. The great house itself became a symbol of wealth and status, showcasing the architectural styles prevalent during the colonial era.The architecture blends influences, with the oldest parts dating back to the 17th century. These sections feature rubble stone construction, while later additions in the 18th century introduced Caribbean-Georgian aesthetics. The house features a gracious Palladian double entrance staircase, an arcaded gallery, and spacious reception rooms.In late December 2024, Rob and Mary Cottrell became the new owners of Clifton Hall, continuing its legacy. They plan to introduce new experiences, including classical music evenings, jazz nights, children's events, community picnics, and afternoon teas.
