Discover more about Gun Hill Signal Station

Perched on the highlands of St. George, Gun Hill Signal Station offers arguably the most magnificent panoramic views of Barbados. Constructed in 1818, it was the most significant of a network of six signal stations erected across the island. These stations played a crucial role in the island's defense and communication, serving as rallying points in the event of civil unrest, warning of approaching ships, and relaying important information. The stations used flags and sometimes cannon fire to transmit messages, allowing rapid communication regarding approaching vessels, hurricane warnings, and even meetings of the Council of Barbados. Gun Hill's hexagonal structure indicates it was rebuilt at some point. Originally, these stations accommodated two soldiers, providing living quarters and a magazine for supplies. The importance of these stations diminished with the advent of the telephone, leading to their abandonment. However, Gun Hill Signal Station was rescued from ruin by the Barbados National Trust, which meticulously restored it in 1982 and opened it to the public. Today, visitors can explore the well-preserved grounds, admire the collection of 19th-century cannons and military artifacts, and climb the signal tower for unparalleled views. One of the most iconic features of Gun Hill is the majestic lion statue carved in 1868 by Captain Henry Wilkinson with the help of military laborers. Hewn from a single piece of coral limestone, the lion stands as a symbol of British imperial power. The Fusiliers Cafe provides a perfect spot to soak in the atmosphere and reflect on the island's rich heritage.
