Foursquare Rum Distillery: A Modern Rum Renaissance
Discover the art of rum-making at Foursquare Rum Distillery, a modern marvel built on a historic sugar plantation, where tradition and innovation blend to create award-winning Bajan rums.
Foursquare Rum Distillery, located in the parish of St. Philip, Barbados, is more than just a distillery; it's a testament to the island's rich history and commitment to quality rum production. Situated on the grounds of a former sugar plantation that dates back to approximately 1720, the distillery seamlessly blends the old with the new, offering visitors a unique and immersive experience. In 1996, the Seale family, with rum-making expertise dating back to 1820, reopened the distillery, breathing new life into the historic site. Today, Richard Seale, a fourth-generation trader and distiller, directs the distilling operations and blending, ensuring that every bottle of Foursquare rum meets the highest standards of excellence. His dedication to traditional rum-making techniques, combined with a passion for innovation, has earned Foursquare numerous accolades and a reputation as one of the world's leading rum producers. The distillery itself is a marvel of modern engineering, designed by an Italian company and equipped with state-of-the-art technology. However, Richard Seale remains a traditionalist at heart, insisting on using only the finest raw ingredients and avoiding any additives such as sugar, caramel, or wood chips. The molasses, sourced from various countries, undergoes a carefully controlled fermentation process, followed by distillation in a combination of pot and column stills. Visitors to Foursquare Rum Distillery are invited to explore the facility at their own pace, following the footprints on the floor that guide them through the various stages of rum production. From the fermentation tanks to the still room and the aging warehouses, guests can witness firsthand the meticulous process that transforms simple ingredients into exceptional rum. Informative displays provide insights into the history of rum-making in Barbados and the unique techniques employed by Foursquare. Beyond the distillery, the Heritage Park offers a glimpse into Barbados' past, with its historic buildings, colonial architecture, and folk museum. The park pays tribute to the important role that sugar and rum have played in the island's history, providing a context for understanding the cultural significance of Foursquare Rum Distillery. One of the highlights of a visit to Foursquare is the tasting room, where guests can sample a range of award-winning rums for a small fee. From smooth white rums to rich, aged varieties, there's a Foursquare rum to suit every palate. Knowledgeable staff are on hand to provide guidance and answer questions, enhancing the tasting experience. Foursquare Rum Distillery is committed to sustainability, implementing environmentally friendly practices throughout its operations. The distillery reuses most of the waste produced, minimizing its impact on the environment. This commitment to sustainability reflects Foursquare's dedication to preserving Barbados' natural resources for future generations. Exceptional Cask Selections represent the unique and rare offerings of Foursquare Rum Distillery that Richard Seale has hand-selected. These are one-of-a-kind expressions, available only for a limited time, and showcasing truly unique approaches to both Rum blending and maturation. These selections have garnered high praise, solidifying Foursquare's position as a leader in the rum industry.
