Discover more about Parktuin Schelfhout

Parktuin Schelfhout, a verdant jewel in Aalst, beckons visitors with its blend of history, natural beauty, and recreational opportunities. Situated between Zonnestraat and Sint-Kamielstraat in the Watertorenwijk, this urban park offers a tranquil escape from the city's vibrant energy. Originally a private garden, the land was acquired by the Schelfhout family in 1873 when notary candidate Cheri Schelfhout married the widow of hop merchant François Seminck. It is believed that the garden was laid out between 1850 and 1870 in the English landscape style, which was very popular at the time. A pond was dug, and the garden was equipped with a vegetable garden and orchard. The garden is located behind the mansion of the Schelfhout family. Characteristic of this mansion is the Louis XV influence. The house is designated as architectural heritage in the province of East Flanders and is located to the left of the entrance on Zonnestraat. In the early 21st century, the land was owned by vzw De Toekomst on the one hand, and GO! Scholengroep Dender on the other. In 2008, both owners agreed with the City of Aalst that the garden would be made publicly accessible. The wall at the back of the garden on Sint-Kamielstraat was replaced by transparent fences, the pond was reopened and the rest of the garden and orchard were restored. In addition, a playground and a sports field were constructed. Today, Parktuin Schelfhout invites visitors to wander along winding paths, discover hidden nooks, and immerse themselves in the beauty of nature. The park's design reflects the English landscape style, characterized by its naturalistic layout, rolling lawns, and strategically placed trees and shrubs. The pond, once a central feature of the private garden, has been revitalized, providing a habitat for aquatic plants and animals. Benches are scattered throughout the park, offering ample opportunities to relax and soak in the peaceful atmosphere. For families with children, Parktuin Schelfhout offers a modern playground equipped with swings, slides, and climbing structures. A sports area provides space for active recreation, with facilities for basketball and other games. These additions make the park a popular destination for families seeking outdoor fun and exercise. Despite its many positive attributes, Parktuin Schelfhout has faced challenges in recent years. Occasional reports of litter and vandalism have prompted the city to implement measures to maintain the park's cleanliness and safety. Efforts are underway to address these issues and ensure that the park remains a welcoming space for all visitors. Parktuin Schelfhout is more than just a park; it's a living testament to Aalst's history and commitment to providing green spaces for its residents. Whether you're seeking a quiet retreat, a place to play, or a connection with nature, this urban oasis offers something for everyone. Its central location makes it easily accessible, inviting locals and tourists alike to discover its charms and create lasting memories. The park is open from 7:00 AM to 9:45 PM from April to September and from 8:00 AM to 7:00 PM during the rest of the year. This schedule allows visitors to enjoy the park during daylight hours throughout the year. Parktuin Schelfhout is a place where history and nature intertwine, offering a unique and enriching experience for all who visit. Its transformation from a private garden to a public park reflects Aalst's dedication to preserving its heritage while providing modern amenities for its community. As you stroll through its paths, take a moment to appreciate the beauty and tranquility of this urban oasis, a true gem in the heart of Aalst. Buurtwild/t, an initiative of the city's Youth Service and vzw Lejo, aims to offer Aalst's youth (from 6 to 25 years old) meaningful leisure activities in their own neighborhood. After school hours, neighborhood animators are active in various squares, including Parktuin Schelfhout, providing a safe and engaging environment for young people to connect and play. Furthermore, the park's location near Woonzorgcentrum De Toekomst provides residents with easy access to green space and nature.
