From Aalst Grote Markt (main square), head east along Hopmarkt, then turn left onto Zonnestraat. Continue along Zonnestraat; the park entrance is on your right, a short walk from the city center. The walk is approximately 5-10 minutes, depending on your pace. Alternatively, from the Sint-Kamielstraat, the park entrance is directly accessible.

If arriving by train at Aalst Station, take any bus heading towards the city center and disembark at a stop near the Grote Markt (e.g., 'Aalst Station Perron 1'). From there, follow the walking directions above. A single bus fare within Aalst is approximately €3. Consider using a De Lijn M-ticket for cost-effectiveness.

If driving, navigate to Zonnestraat, 9300 Aalst. Limited street parking is available. Alternatively, use the Kroonparking in Zonnestraat, which offers 116 spaces and is within walking distance of the park. Situated between Zonnestraat and Sint-Kamielstraat in the Watertorenwijk, this urban park offers a tranquil escape from the city's vibrant energy. Originally a private garden, the land was acquired by the Schelfhout family in 1873 when notary candidate Cheri Schelfhout married the widow of hop merchant François Seminck. It is believed that the garden was laid out between 1850 and 1870 in the English landscape style, which was very popular at the time. A pond was dug, and the garden was equipped with a vegetable garden and orchard. The garden is located behind the mansion of the Schelfhout family. Characteristic of this mansion is the Louis XV influence. The house is designated as architectural heritage in the province of East Flanders and is located to the left of the entrance on Zonnestraat. In the early 21st century, the land was owned by vzw De Toekomst on the one hand, and GO! Scholengroep Dender on the other. In 2008, both owners agreed with the City of Aalst that the garden would be made publicly accessible. The wall at the back of the garden on Sint-Kamielstraat was replaced by transparent fences, the pond was reopened and the rest of the garden and orchard were restored. In addition, a playground and a sports field were constructed. Today, Parktuin Schelfhout invites visitors to wander along winding paths, discover hidden nooks, and immerse themselves in the beauty of nature. The park's design reflects the English landscape style, characterized by its naturalistic layout, rolling lawns, and strategically placed trees and shrubs. The pond, once a central feature of the private garden, has been revitalized, providing a habitat for aquatic plants and animals.
