Discover more about Castle of Reinhardstein

The Castle of Reinhardstein, also known as Burg Metternich, is a striking medieval castle dramatically situated on a rocky outcrop overlooking the Warche River in the heart of the Belgian Ardennes. Built in 1354 by Renaud de Waimes with the authorization of Wenceslas, Duke of Luxembourg, the castle has a rich and storied past. Over the centuries, it passed through several prominent families, including the Metternichs, before falling into ruin after the French Revolution. For over 150 years, the castle was left to decay, serving even as a quarry. However, in 1965, a passionate history professor, Jean Overloop, rediscovered the ruins and dedicated himself to its reconstruction. Using historical documents, Overloop painstakingly rebuilt the castle, restoring it to its former glory. Today, visitors can explore the castle's many rooms, including the Knights' Hall, guard room, chapel, and living quarters, which are filled with antique furniture, weaponry, and tapestries. A tour of Reinhardstein Castle offers a captivating journey back to the Middle Ages. In addition to the castle itself, the surrounding area offers scenic hiking trails and natural attractions, including Belgium's highest waterfall. The castle also hosts various events throughout the year, such as medieval festivals, candlelight tours, and Christmas celebrations.
