Strategically positioned on a rocky ridge within a sharp bend of the Semois River, the castle has been a crucial defensive site for centuries.The castle is famously associated with Godfrey of Bouillon, who inherited it in 1082. To finance his participation in the First Crusade, Godfrey sold the castle to Otbert, the Bishop of Liège. Over the centuries, the castle underwent several sieges and changes in ownership. In the late 17th century, Louis XIV's military architect, Vauban, enhanced the castle with heavy artillery fortifications.Today, visitors can explore the castle's extensive complex of tunnels, dungeons, and ramparts.
