Discover more about Groeninge Museum

The Groeninge Museum, located on the Dijver in Bruges, is a must-see for art enthusiasts. Housed on the site of the medieval Eekhout Abbey, the museum provides a varied overview of the history of Belgian visual art, with top-class paintings by world-renowned Flemish primitives as a highlight. The museum's collection spans six centuries, from Jan van Eyck to Marcel Broodthaers. Visitors can marvel at gems from Renaissance and Baroque masters, Bruges neo-classical canvasses from the 18th and 19th centuries, and masterpieces by the Flemish expressionists. The museum also features a unique collection of works by Marcel Broodthaers. The Groeninge Museum's origins trace back to the early 18th century, making it one of Belgium's oldest museums. For much of its early history, it was linked to the Bruges Academy, founded in 1717. The museum's collection was systematically enriched during the second half of the 20th century to include important examples of Flemish Expressionism. Key works include Jan van Eyck's "Madonna with Canon Joris Van der Paele", Hans Memling's "Moreel Triptych", and Gerard David's "Judgment of Cambyses". The museum also houses works by Hugo van der Goes, Hieronymus Bosch, and René Magritte. The building itself was designed by architect Joseph Viérin, and Bruges' collection of paintings was centralised here in 1930. An adjoining neo-gothic building by architect Jean-Baptiste Bethune has provided extra space since 1995.
