Discover more about Provincial Court

The Provincial Court, or Provinciaal Hof in Dutch, stands as a testament to Bruges' rich history and architectural grandeur. Located on the Markt (Market Square), this Neo-Gothic building is hard to miss with its decorative spires and intricate stone carvings. Originally constructed between 1887 and 1920, the Provincial Court replaced a neoclassical structure that had been destroyed by fire. Designed by architects Louis Delacenserie and René Buyck, it initially served as the meeting place for the provincial government of West Flanders. The building was also home to a post office until 1891. Today, the Provincial Court is primarily a ceremonial building and a venue for exhibitions. Visitors can explore its magnificent interior, which features sculptures by Hendrik and Gustaaf Pickery, stained glass windows by Jules Dobbelaere, and chandeliers by Edward De Vooght. The central meeting room showcases ten sculptures of royalty and mural paintings of famous figures from West Flanders. The Provincial Court has recently undergone renovations to enhance accessibility and sustainability, transforming it into an open house for all. The building now features a lift, accessible restrooms, and energy-efficient lighting.
