The Godshuis de Vos, located on Noordstraat in Bruges, is a testament to the city's long history of charitable giving and social support. Founded in 1715 by Christiaan De Vos, it provided housing for six impoverished widows. These almshouses, also known as 'godshuizen' in Flemish, represent a tradition dating back to the 14th century, where wealthy citizens or guilds offered housing to the needy. In return, residents were expected to pray for the benefactor's soul.The Godshuis de Vos originally consisted of six small houses and a chapel arranged around a garden, enclosed by a wall to maintain privacy. The chapel, built in the Baroque style, served as a central point for the residents' daily prayers. After Christiaan De Vos's death, management of the almshouse passed to the provost and pastors of the Church of Our Lady, with his son retaining the right to appoint residents.Over the centuries, the Godshuis de Vos has undergone several changes. In 1963, the enclosing wall was replaced with a low wall, opening up the complex to public view. In 1994, the houses were restored and reduced to four dwellings. Today, the Godshuis de Vos is owned by the city and managed by the Public Centre for Social Welfare (OCMW), providing affordable housing for senior citizens. Although visitors cannot enter the houses, they can still appreciate the architecture and tranquil atmosphere from the street. The complex has been protected as a monument since 1996 and is part of the Minnewater and surrounding area, which is also a protected cityscape.
