Discover more about Hallerbos

Hallerbos, a protected nature reserve also known as the Blue Forest, is a captivating destination located just south of Brussels, near the town of Halle. Its history stretches back to the Mesolithic era, when it formed part of the vast Silva Carbonaria. Over time, it evolved into a domain owned by nobles and religious chapters, eventually becoming a Belgian State forest in 1929 after heavy logging by German forces during World War I. Reforestation efforts from 1930 to 1950 shaped the forest we see today. The forest's main draw is the spectacular display of bluebells that bloom for approximately 7-10 days in April and May. These delicate flowers create a mesmerizing blue carpet beneath the beech, oak, and birch trees, creating a fairytale-like atmosphere. While the bluebells are the star attraction, Hallerbos also offers a variety of other flora and fauna, including wild orchids, deer, foxes, and over 100 species of birds. Visitors can explore the forest via several well-marked hiking trails, including the popular Bluebell Trail, the Sequoia Hike, and the Roebuck Hike. These trails cater to different fitness levels and offer varying perspectives of the forest's beauty. The forest also features picnic areas and playgrounds, making it an ideal destination for families. Hallerbos is open to the public year-round, with no entrance fee, allowing visitors to experience its unique charm in every season.
