Saint Rumbold's Cathedral: A Mechelen Icon

Saint Rumbold's Cathedral, dedicated to Saint Rumbold, an Irish missionary and martyr, stands as a testament to Mechelen's rich history and architectural prowess. Construction of the cathedral commenced in the 13th century, evolving over centuries and showcasing the Brabantine Gothic style. The cathedral became the main church of the Archdiocese of Mechelen in 1559. The most striking feature is its 97-meter tower, originally intended to reach 167 meters, offering panoramic views of Mechelen. Though never completed due to financial constraints, the tower remains a recognizable symbol and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Visitors can climb the 514 steps to the top, passing various chambers that once served essential functions, such as the Crane Chamber, Forge Chamber, Bell Chamber, Carillon Chamber, Clock Chamber and Ash Cellar. The Skywalk, added in 2009, provides sweeping views of the surrounding countryside. The cathedral's interior is equally impressive, housing 25 paintings illustrating the life of Saint Rumbold, a Baroque high altar and choir by Lucas Faydherbe, paintings by Anthony van Dyck, sculptures and stained-glass windows. The shrine of St. Rumbold is one of the most important relics in the cathedral. Throughout its history, the cathedral has withstood religious wars, bombings, and fires, always restored to its former glory.
