Founded in 1794, the Abdij der Trappisten van Westmalle is a monastery of Cistercians of Strict Observance, located in Westmalle, Belgium. The monks follow a life of prayer and work, and are perhaps best known for their world-renowned Trappist beers. While the abbey and brewery are not generally open to the public, the surrounding area provides a peaceful escape with lush landscapes. Visitors can explore the Trappistenpad, an 8km walking route that introduces you to the abbey's surroundings. Although tours of the brewery are rare, the brewery opened its doors to the public in September 2024, but tickets sold out quickly. There may be opportunities for visits in the future. The abbey also produces cheese and milk. After a walk, one can enjoy Westmalle Trappist beer, cheese, and cheese croquettes at the nearby Café Trappisten.
