O.L.V. ter Potterie: A Sanctuary of History and Art

Located on the tranquil Potterierei canal, O.L.V. ter Potterie is a captivating historical complex that blends Bruges' rich history with stunning art and serene spirituality. Originally a hospital founded in the late 13th century, it provided refuge for pilgrims, travelers, and the sick. The complex evolved into a significant pilgrimage site, celebrated for its miraculous sculpture of the Madonna and Child. Highlights include a silver cabinet filled with reliquaries, candlesticks, and holy water bottles, along with paintings depicting the hospital's benefactors. A remarkable 16th-century writing desk, bearing the initials of Emperor Charles V, is also on display. The adjoining Baroque church is a must-see, housing a 13th-century limestone sculpture of the Madonna and Child, considered one of Bruges' oldest. Tapestries, stained glass windows, and a miracle book illustrate the miracles attributed to this revered sculpture. The 'Bruges Promise' procession, held annually on August 15th, originates from a vow made in 1304 to the Virgin Mary at this church, adding to its cultural significance.
