Discover more about Provincial Court

Located on the Markt, Bruges' main square, the Provincial Court is an architectural gem that embodies the city's rich heritage. This neo-Gothic palace, also known as Provinciaal Hof, replaced the former Waterhalle and a neoclassical building that burned down in 1878. Construction began in 1887, with architects Louis Delacenserie and René Buyck. The post office opened in 1891, the first part of the Provincial Court in 1892, and the final parts were completed in 1920. Easily recognizable by its decorative spires, the Provincial Court stands as one of Bruges' most beautiful examples of Gothic Revival architecture. Inside, visitors can admire the intricate details, including stained glass windows, frescoes, and mosaics that depict the history of Flanders. The central meeting room features sculptures of royalty by Hendrik Pickery and mural paintings of famous figures from West Flanders. Though it ceased to be a government meeting hall in 1999, the Provincial Court remains a ceremonial building and a venue for exhibitions. Recent renovations have made the building more accessible, including the addition of lifts and the installation of energy-efficient lighting. The Provincial Court is now an open house for visitors to explore and appreciate its architectural and historical significance.
