Leopoldpark: A Green Oasis in Ostend

Leopoldpark, a verdant escape in the heart of Ostend, offers visitors a tranquil retreat from the lively city atmosphere. Designed by garden architect Louis Fuchs and completed in 1870, the park was inspired by the English garden style, featuring winding walkways, picturesque bridges, and colorful flower displays. Originally, the park was laid out over a portion of Ostend's old city walls and extended into the military domain, giving it a unique historical foundation. Today, remnants of the past, like a section of the old city wall where a stone lioness sculpture rests, can still be seen. The park is home to several notable attractions. The wooden music kiosk, dating back to 1885, hosts regular musical performances. The renowned flower clock, installed in 1963, is a major draw, featuring intricate floral designs that are updated daily during the summer. Scattered throughout the park are various statues and sculptures, including bronze heads by Leo Copers and the statue 'The Sea' by George Grard, affectionately known as 'Dikke Mathilde' (Fat Matilda) by locals. Visitors can enjoy a leisurely stroll along the park's paths, relax by the serpentine lake, or have fun at the mini-golf course. During the Christmas season, the park transforms into 'Winter in the Park,' featuring a floating ice rink, Christmas chalets, and festive decorations.
