Discover more about Belfry of Thuin

Rising high above the town, the Belfry of Thuin is a striking landmark and a testament to the city's enduring spirit. This historic structure, dating back to the 17th century, is more than just a bell tower; it's a symbol of Thuin's independence and a vestige of its fascinating past. Recognized by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site, the belfry is one of 56 such towers in Belgium and France, celebrated for their architectural significance and their role in the development of municipal power. Originally constructed between 1153 and 1164 as part of the old Church of Saint-Théodard, the tower served as both a bell tower and a communal watchtower. Over the centuries, it witnessed the city's growth, survived numerous attacks, and even escaped demolition during the French Revolution. The belfry's architecture reflects its storied past, with a Baroque style, a square building with a tapered base, and a total height of 60 meters. Visitors can ascend the tower, climbing over 190 steps to reach the top. Along the way, a film and explanatory panels in Dutch, English, and French detail the belfry's history and restoration. At the summit, four turrets offer panoramic views of the Sambre and Biesmelle valleys. The belfry also houses a carillon of 25 bells, including the two oldest, affectionately named Maria and Paula, which date back to the 1760s.
