Discover more about Castle of Crevecoeur

The Castle of Crevecoeur, perched high above the Meuse River in Bouvignes-sur-Meuse near Dinant, is a historical site steeped in legend and offering breathtaking views. Constructed in 1320, the castle's strategic location made it a key defensive point during numerous conflicts between Bouvignes and Dinant. The dungeon, dating back to the 14th and 15th centuries, is the oldest part of the castle. Crèvecoeur, meaning 'heartbreak,' derives its name from a tragic legend. During a siege in 1554 by King Henry II of France, it is said that three officers' fiancées, witnessing the castle's imminent fall, leapt to their deaths from the tower rather than face capture. This act of defiance and despair gave the castle its sorrowful name. Over the centuries, the castle faced numerous sieges and battles, suffering significant damage. Although partially rebuilt between 1567 and 1580, it was eventually dismantled in 1672. Today, the ruins of Crèvecoeur offer a secure and pleasant walking experience, rewarding visitors with remarkable views of the Meuse valley and the surrounding landscape. The site is open to the public year-round, inviting exploration of its historic grounds and panoramic vistas.
