Discover more about Belfort

The Belfry of Bruges, also known as Belfort, is a captivating medieval bell tower that stands tall in the historic center of Bruges. Rising 83 meters (272 feet) above the Markt (Market Square), this iconic structure has been a symbol of Bruges for centuries. Originally erected around 1240, the Belfry has served as a treasury, municipal archive, and lookout post. Over the centuries, it has been damaged by fire and storms, leading to several rebuilds and restorations. The current neo-Gothic crown was added in 1822. Inside, a narrow, steep staircase of 366 steps is open to the public. Along the way up, you can stop at different rooms, including the old treasury where the city's important documents and funds were kept. The climb culminates in breathtaking 360° views of Bruges and its surroundings. The Belfry is also known for its carillon, a set of 47 bells that fill the city with music. Regular carillon concerts take place on Wednesdays, Saturdays, and Sundays from 11 AM to noon, with additional concerts during the summer months.
