Discover more about Vrijdagmarkt

Vrijdagmarkt is more than just a square; it's a living monument that has been at the heart of Ghent for centuries. The square has been a stage for social gatherings, markets, and political events since the 12th century. Today, Vrijdagmarkt is a bustling hub where locals and tourists converge amidst terraces, market stalls, and historic buildings. Dominating the square is the statue of Jacob van Artevelde, a 14th-century statesman who played a crucial role in Ghent's history by restoring the textile industry. His statue, erected in 1863, stands as a reminder of Ghent's rich past. The square is surrounded by stately guild houses and the monumental socialist house of the people, Bond Moyson, reflecting a unique blend of history and contemporary city life. While known as the Friday Market, markets also take place on Saturdays. The Friday market offers fresh food, including bread, fish, fruits, vegetables, and Italian delicacies. On Saturdays, the market focuses on new merchandise. The Vrijdagmarkt has served as a marketplace since the Middle Ages. It is also a place where royalty were officially received at ceremonies and, sadly, where executions took place; the last public execution was in 1863.
