Getting There

  • Walking

    From the center of Thimphu, head south towards the main street, Norzin Lam. Continue walking south until you reach the intersection with the traffic lights near the clock tower. Turn right at the traffic lights onto Chhoten Lam. Keep walking straight for about 15 minutes until you reach the intersection with the road leading to Semtokha. You will see a sign for Semtokha Dzong. Turn left and continue on this road. After about 10 minutes, you will see Simtokha Dzong on your right. The fortress is elevated, so there might be some stairs to climb to reach the main entrance.

  • Public Bus

    From the main bus station in Thimphu, take a bus heading towards Semtokha. Buses are frequent and you should find one that departs every 15-20 minutes. Inform the conductor that you are going to Simtokha Dzong. The journey takes approximately 30 minutes. Once you reach the stop for Semtokha, you will need to walk about 5 minutes uphill to reach the Dzong. Follow the signs or ask locals for directions if needed.
