If you are driving, start from San Pedro de Atacama, which is the nearest town with car rental services. Head south on Route 23 towards the Chile/Argentina border. After about 15 km, you will see signs for Cerro Toco. Follow the signs and take the unpaved road that leads directly to the base of the mountain. The road can be rough, so a 4WD vehicle is recommended. The drive will take approximately 30-45 minutes depending on road conditions. Ensure you have enough fuel and supplies as there are no services along the way.
Public Transportation
For those using public transport, take a local bus from San Pedro de Atacama to the 'Cerro Toco' viewpoint, which departs from the main bus terminal. The journey takes about 1 hour and costs approximately 5,000 CLP. Be sure to confirm the bus schedule in advance, as services may be limited. Once you arrive at the viewpoint, you will need to hike for about 1-2 hours to reach the summit. Bring plenty of water and snacks for the hike.
