If you are driving from the main town of Yungas, start on the main highway (Route 16) heading northeast. Follow Route 16 for approximately 30 kilometers until you reach the turnoff towards the mountains. The road will be winding and may require caution due to potential landslides. Once you see signs for 'Pico Austria,' take the left turn onto the dirt road. Continue for about 10 kilometers until you reach the designated parking area near the base of the mountain. Be prepared for a rough terrain, and ensure your vehicle is suitable for off-road driving.
Public Transportation
To reach Pico Austria using public transportation, start from the central bus terminal in Yungas, where you can find buses heading towards the nearby town of Coroico. The fare is approximately 10 BOB ($1.50) and the journey takes about 1.5 hours. Once you arrive in Coroico, look for local 'trufis' (shared taxis) that travel to the base of Pico Austria. The fare for the trufi is around 5 BOB ($0.75) and the ride takes about 30 minutes. Ensure you communicate your destination to the driver and confirm they will drop you off near the entrance to the mountain area.
Hiking
If you prefer to hike to Pico Austria, you can start from the nearest town, Coroico. From Coroico, take the trail that leads into the mountains. The hike is challenging and takes approximately 3-4 hours, depending on your pace. Ensure you have proper hiking gear, enough water, and snacks for the journey. The trail is marked, but it can be steep and rocky, so proceed with caution. Always check the weather before you set out as conditions can change rapidly in the mountains.
