Discover more about Emperor's Bridge

The Emperor's Bridge, known locally as Careva Ćuprija, is more than just a functional crossing; it's a landmark steeped in Sarajevo's rich history. The original bridge was constructed in 1462 by Isa Bey Ishaković, the founder of Sarajevo, to link Careva mahala with Kolobara Han. This vital connection facilitated trade and communication across the Miljacka River. Throughout the centuries, the bridge faced numerous challenges. It was destroyed by floods in 1619 and 1791, each time being rebuilt. During the Austro-Hungarian occupation, the river's flow was regulated, leading to the demolition of the old bridge. In 1897, a new concrete bridge was erected about 20 meters upstream. This bridge, the first of its kind in Sarajevo, marked a significant period of urban development and the city's transformation in the 19th century. During the interwar period, it was named after Bogdan Žerajić, but in 1992, it was renamed Careva Ćuprija. The bridge maintains its original concrete construction and was designated a National Monument of Bosnia and Herzegovina in 2009. Today, the Emperor's Bridge offers picturesque views of the Miljacka River, surrounding hills, and the city. Its central location makes it an ideal starting point for exploring Baščaršija and other cultural attractions.
