Discover more about Sutjeska National Park

Sutjeska National Park, established in 1962, stands as Bosnia and Herzegovina's oldest and largest national park, encompassing over 17,000 hectares of rugged terrain. This natural sanctuary is a tapestry of diverse ecosystems, from dense forests and verdant valleys to towering mountain peaks. The park is bounded by the Piva, Drina, and Neretva rivers, and the mountains of Bioč, Vučevo, Maglić, Volujak, Lebršnik and Zelengora. At the heart of Sutjeska lies the Perućica primeval forest, one of the last two remaining in Europe, a UNESCO-recognized site with trees over 300 years old. This strictly protected area offers a glimpse into an ancient world, with its untouched wilderness and remarkable biodiversity. The park is also home to Maglić Mountain, the highest peak in Bosnia and Herzegovina, reaching 2,386 meters. Climbing Maglić rewards hikers with panoramic views of the surrounding landscapes, including the Montenegrin part of the massif, which features Trnovačko Lake. Zelengora Mountain, known as the 'mountain queen of Herzegovina', offers a gentler landscape with stunning glacial lakes. These 'mountain eyes,' such as Orlovačko Lake, Gornje Bare, and Donje Bare, reflect the surrounding peaks in their clear waters. Sutjeska National Park is also a place of historical significance, as the site of the Battle of Sutjeska in 1943 during World War II. The Tjentište memorial complex commemorates this battle and the fallen fighters, serving as a reminder of the region's turbulent past. Today, Sutjeska National Park is a haven for outdoor enthusiasts. Hiking, camping, and mountain biking are popular activities, with trails catering to all levels of experience. The park's diverse flora and fauna, including bears, wolves, lynx, chamois, and various bird species, make it a paradise for nature lovers.
