Discover more about Saint Mark Cemetery

Saint Mark Cemetery, or Sveti Marko Groblje, is a significant three-and-a-half-acre Serbian Orthodox cemetery with a history stretching back to the 19th century. The cemetery is the final resting place for a diverse group of people, including Italian and German families, numerous Partisan soldiers from World War II, prominent citizens, and even a few Roman Catholics. The cemetery features many upright markers and granite slabs adorned with Christian crosses and angels. Dedicated to St. Mark, the cemetery includes a small, bright yellow chapel with a red bell tower, which was opened on October 15, 1922. The entrance is marked by a concrete arch with a black wrought iron gate, complemented by a black wrought iron fence that surrounds the entire cemetery. One of the most notable graves within Saint Mark Cemetery is that of Gavrilo Princip, the nineteen-year-old who assassinated Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria and his wife, an act that is widely considered to have hastened the start of World War I. Princip's remains, along with those of his fellow conspirators, rest in the Vidovdan Heroes Chapel. The cemetery's location in a highly populated area of East Sarajevo means it's surrounded by other cemeteries, including the Roman Catholic St. Joseph's Cemetery, the Cemetery of Holy Archangels George and Gabriel, the City Cemetery, the Orthodox Hospital Cemetery, and an Islamic Cemetery.
