Discover more about Sarajevo War Theatre

The Sarajevo War Theatre (SARTR) stands as a testament to the resilience of art and culture amidst conflict. Established on May 17, 1992, during the Siege of Sarajevo, it emerged as a vital space for artists from the city's major theaters, which had ceased operations due to the war. SARTR quickly became known for its anti-war pieces, often directed by students from the Academy of Performing Arts, offering a spiritual counterpoint to the surrealism of war. Throughout the siege, SARTR staged over 2,000 performances, providing a platform for actors and collaborators to express themselves and maintain their dignity through art. Its first production, 'Sklonište' (Shelter), premiered in 1992 and ran for 97 showings. In 1994, SARTR became the first Bosnian theater to showcase its productions abroad, visiting the Avignon Festival. Today, SARTR continues to be a dynamic cultural hub, hosting a variety of performances, workshops, and events that engage the community and explore significant historical themes. It serves as a venue for the MESS International Theatre Festival and the Open University of Sarajevo. SARTR gathers young thespians who stage their new plays at Sarajevo's Center for Social Activities. Despite being Sarajevo's youngest theater, its work is a true testimony to the fact that even under the most difficult conditions, man can salvage his human dignity through culture and art.
