Discover more about Veliki park

Veliki Park, or Great Park, is the largest green space in Sarajevo's city center, providing a peaceful retreat from the urban bustle. Situated between several main streets, including Maršala Tita and Trampina, the park offers a serene atmosphere with winding paths and plenty of benches. Originally a Muslim cemetery known as Čekrekčija's Cemetery, the park's history is evident in the centuries-old nišans (tombstones) scattered throughout. The cemetery was named after Muslihudin Hajji Mustafa Čekrekčija, who also built Sarajevo's first domed mosque in Baščaršija in 1526. When Austro-Hungarian authorities arrived, burials were prohibited in the city center for hygiene reasons, and the area was transformed into a park with the planting of saplings in 1886. Today, Veliki Park features several notable monuments, including one dedicated to the children of Sarajevo who lost their lives during the 1992-1995 war. There is also the statue called “Nermine, dođi”, which translates to “Nermine, come here”. It depicts a father calling his son to surrender during the Srebrenica genocide; both were later found in a mass grave. These poignant memorials serve as reminders of the city's past and offer a space for contemplation. The park is also home to diverse plant species, sculptures, and art installations, making it a vibrant hub for nature and art enthusiasts.
