Discover more about Sarajevo

Sarajevo, nestled in a valley surrounded by the Dinaric Alps, is more than just a capital city; it's a living museum of interwoven histories and cultures. Founded by the Ottoman Empire in the 15th century, Sarajevo quickly grew into a vital trading center, particularly known for its silk trade. The city's Baščaršija, a bustling bazaar, remains a testament to this era, with its oriental streets and traditional crafts. Under the Austro-Hungarian Empire, Sarajevo underwent modernization with new infrastructure and European architectural styles, creating a unique blend of Ottoman and European influences. However, it was also here that the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand in 1914 ignited World War I, forever marking Sarajevo in the annals of history. During the 20th century, Sarajevo experienced periods of both unity and conflict, including its time as host of the 1984 Winter Olympics, symbolizing a moment of harmony. The city then endured the Siege of Sarajevo in the 1990s, a brutal period of the Bosnian War, which left lasting scars but also demonstrated the incredible resilience of its people. Today, Sarajevo is a city reborn, where the echoes of the past resonate in its vibrant streets, museums, and cultural landmarks. Visitors can explore religious sites like the Gazi Husrev-beg Mosque, wander through the historic Latin Bridge, and reflect at the Eternal Flame monument. The city's rich cultural tapestry, combined with its stunning natural surroundings, makes Sarajevo a compelling destination for those seeking a deeper understanding of history, culture, and the human spirit.
