The Tjentište War Memorial, also known as the Valley of Heroes, is a poignant and monumental tribute to the Battle of Sutjeska, a significant event in World War II. Located within the Sutjeska National Park in Bosnia and Herzegovina, this striking memorial commemorates the Yugoslav Partisan soldiers who fought against the Axis forces in 1943. The battle, which took place from May 15 to June 16, 1943, saw 22,000 Partisans facing approximately 127,000 Axis soldiers. Despite being outnumbered and encircled, the Partisans managed to break through the Axis lines, a feat that became a symbol of their resilience and determination. However, the victory came at a great cost, with over 7,000 Partisan soldiers losing their lives. The memorial complex, designed by Miodrag Živković and Ranko Radović, was built in the 1970s as a tribute to the fallen soldiers. The centerpiece of the complex is a pair of 19-meter-tall, soaring concrete wings that symbolize the Partisans' victory over oppression. The adjacent Spomen-Dom (Memorial House), created in 1975 by architect Ranko Radović, features the engraved names of 7,356 Partisan soldiers who perished during the Battle of Sutjeska and frescoes by Krsto Hegedušić and Dušan Plenče. Visiting the Tjentište War Memorial offers a chance to reflect on the sacrifices made during the war and to appreciate the stunning natural beauty of Sutjeska National Park. The park itself offers opportunities for hiking, exploring, and enjoying the pristine environment.
