Getting There

  • Public Transport

    From Sarajevo, take a bus to Tjentište. Buses depart from the East Sarajevo Bus Station. The journey takes approximately 2.5 hours and costs around €11. From the Tjentište bus stop, follow the signs to the Valley of Heroes, about a 20-minute walk. The Valley of Heroes is located roughly 2 kilometers southeast of the village center along the main road (M20).

  • Car

    From the main entrance of Sutjeska National Park, drive towards Tjentište on the M20. After approximately 15 kilometers, you will reach Tjentište. The Valley of Heroes is located just outside the village; look for directional signs. Parking is available near the site. Entrance to Sutjeska National Park costs a symbolic 5KM (2.5 euros).

    If you are already in Tjentište, head out of the village in the southeast direction along the main road (M20). The Valley of Heroes is approximately 2 kilometers from the village center. The walk should take about 30-40 minutes depending on your pace.

The Valley of Heroes, located in Tjentište within Sutjeska National Park, stands as a powerful memorial to the Battle of Sutjeska, a significant World War II engagement. In the summer of 1943, Partisan forces clashed with a much larger German force in a bloody and decisive battle. The memorial complex, built in the 1970s, honors the courage and sacrifice of the Partisans. The centerpiece of the valley is a monumental sculpture by Miodrag Živković, symbolizing the Partisans' breakthrough against the enemy. The complex also includes the Spomen-Dom (Memorial House), designed by Ranko Radović, which features frescoes depicting scenes from the battle. The names of over 7,000 fallen Partisans are inscribed on the walls inside the Spomen-Dom. Visitors can explore the valley's monuments and reflect on the history while enjoying the surrounding natural beauty. The site offers panoramic views of the lush green hills and mountains of Sutjeska National Park.
