Discover more about Sarajevska žičara

The Sarajevska žičara is more than just a mode of transportation; it's a symbol of Sarajevo's resilience and reconnection with nature. Originally built in 1959, the cable car quickly became an iconic part of the city, linking the Bistrik neighborhood to the summit of Trebević Mountain, known as the 'lungs of Sarajevo'. The mountain was a favorite destination for locals seeking fresh air, picnics, and stunning views. During the war in the 1990s, the cable car was destroyed, and Trebević became a frontline. For over two decades, the city was without this vital link. In April 2018, the cable car was rebuilt and reopened, marking a momentous occasion for Sarajevo. The new cable car boasts 33 gondolas, each capable of carrying ten passengers, whisking them to the top in approximately eight minutes. The cars are painted in the colors of the Olympic rings, a nod to Sarajevo's hosting of the 1984 Winter Olympics, the bobsleigh track being one of the main attractions at the top of the mountain. At the summit, visitors can explore hiking trails, visit the remains of the Olympic bobsled track, and enjoy panoramic views of Sarajevo. There's also a cafe, Coffee2Go, where you can relax and take in the scenery. Trebević Mountain offers a variety of activities, from leisurely walks in nature to exploring historical landmarks. The cable car is pet-friendly, so you can bring your furry friends along for the ride.
