Discover more about Khama Rhino Sanctuary

The Khama Rhino Sanctuary, located 25km north of Serowe, Botswana, stands as a testament to successful community-driven conservation. Founded in 1992, the sanctuary's mission is to protect the dwindling rhino population and restore the area's rich wildlife, while also providing economic benefits to the local community through tourism. Covering approximately 4,300 hectares of Kalahari sandveld, the sanctuary provides a safe haven for both black and white rhinos. In addition to these iconic species, visitors can observe over 30 other mammal species, including zebra, giraffe, wildebeest, and various antelopes, as well as over 230 species of birds. The landscape is characterized by the Serwe Pan, a large grassy depression with natural waterholes, attracting a diverse array of wildlife. The sanctuary's origins trace back to 1989 when residents of Serowe, led by Lt. Gen. Seretse Khama Ian Khama, concerned about escalating rhino poaching, conceived the idea of a wildlife reserve. In 1992, the first white rhinos were reintroduced from Chobe National Park, followed by black rhinos in 2002. The Botswana Defense Force provides constant patrols to ensure the rhinos' safety. Today, the Khama Rhino Sanctuary serves as a model for wildlife conservation and a popular stopover for travelers exploring Botswana. Visitors can enjoy guided game drives, rhino tracking, and nature walks, while contributing to the sanctuary's vital conservation work and supporting the local community. Accommodation options range from campsites to chalets, providing a comfortable base for exploring this remarkable sanctuary.
