    From Nata village, follow the signs directing you to Nata Bird Sanctuary (M773+MJ8). The sanctuary is located about 10 km south of the village center on a well-maintained dirt road. There might be a small entrance fee at the sanctuary, which is approximately BWP 100 per person for non-residents and BWP 35 for the vehicle.

    From any location in the Makgadikgadi Pans, you can take a minibus taxi to Nata village. Look for taxis labeled 'Nata' at local pickup points. The fare is typically around 50 Pula (approximately $5) per person. Once you arrive in Nata, you can hire a local taxi or arrange for a guide to take you to Nata Bird Sanctuary, which is about 10 km away. Be sure to discuss the fare beforehand; it usually ranges from 100 to 150 Pula (approximately $10 to $15) for a round trip.

    Nata Bird Sanctuary, established in 1988 and opened in 1993, stands as a testament to community-based conservation in Botswana. This 230-square-kilometer sanctuary on the Sowa Pan's edge is managed by the Kalahari Conservation Society, with proceeds benefiting local communities.The sanctuary's main draw is its birdlife, with over 165 species recorded. After the rains (roughly November to March), the pans become a haven for waterbirds, including flamingos, pelicans, ducks, geese, and spoonbills. The sanctuary is one of only three nesting sites for flamingos in Africa, sometimes hosting over 250,000 flamingos. Raptors like the African fish eagle and martial eagle can also be spotted.Aside from birds, the sanctuary is home to diverse wildlife, including kudu, oryx, springbok, hartebeest, eland, zebra, jackals, and more. Visitors can explore the sanctuary by vehicle, with a viewing platform providing vistas of the Sowa Pan and its birdlife. The best time to visit is during the wet season (January to April) for peak birdwatching.Visitors can stay at the Nata Lodge or camp near the entrance. The roads are generally easy to travel during the dry season, but a 4x4 is recommended during the rainy season.
