    Getting There

    Self-Drive

Deception Valley is typically accessed by self-drive from Maun. The journey requires a 4x4 vehicle and takes several hours on gravel and sand roads. From Maun, take the road towards Francistown/Samedupi. About 15km outside Maun, turn right at the Dinaka sign towards Samedupi. Follow the gravel road, continuing straight through a cattle fence. After some distance, the road curves sharply left towards Somelo; stay on the main track. At the Dinaka sign, a sand road begins; follow this, ignoring small turnoffs. Look for a damaged cattle fence on your left and follow it. The main track will turn right, then lead westwards away from the fence, eventually reaching another cattle fence on your right. Continue along this fence until you see game fences. Keep the game fences on your right, passing a 'Deon' sign and a gate stating 'Kgabo'. You will arrive at Dinaka's gate, where you can only turn left. Follow the fence line on your right until you see a gate with a brown hyena sign. Go through this gate and follow the directions inside the reserve. Note that park entry fees are applicable, but costs vary. Ensure you have sufficient fuel, water, and supplies, as there are no facilities within the reserve.

    Discover more about Deception Valley

Deception Valley, nestled in the heart of Botswana's Central Kalahari Game Reserve, presents a captivating paradox of arid beauty and surprising vitality. The valley owes its name to the shimmering mirages that frequently appear above the Deception Pan, a vast, dry clay expanse that tricks the eye into believing it's filled with water. This illusion has misled travelers for centuries and continues to fascinate visitors today.Deception Valley is believed to be the remnant of an ancient river, potentially a tributary of a vast prehistoric lake that once covered much of the central plateau. Today, it's a long, broad inter-dune valley characterized by grassy plains and scattered woodlands. During the rainy season (typically December to April), the valley transforms into a lush, green paradise, attracting large concentrations of game.Wildlife thrives here, with herds of springbok, gemsbok, and wildebeest grazing on the sweet grasses. Predators such as lions, cheetahs, and jackals follow closely behind, creating a dynamic ecosystem. Birdwatchers will delight in the diverse avian population, with species like bataleurs, shaft-tailed whydahs, and various larks and shrikes gracing the skies.Deception Valley also holds historical significance as the site where Mark and Delia Owens conducted their pioneering conservation work in the 1970s. Their experiences, chronicled in the book 'Cry of the Kalahari,' brought global attention to the region's unique ecosystems and the challenges of living in such a remote environment.Visitors to Deception Valley can explore the area through game drives and guided walks, often accompanied by Bushman trackers who share their traditional knowledge of the land. Camping is a popular option for those seeking a truly immersive experience, though visitors must be self-sufficient and prepared for the challenges of the wilderness.
