Discover more about Moremi Game Reserve

Moremi Game Reserve, situated in the eastern part of the Okavango Delta, is a stunning mosaic of ecosystems and a haven for wildlife enthusiasts. Covering approximately 5,000 square kilometers, the reserve boasts a remarkable array of habitats, from mopane woodlands and acacia forests to floodplains, lagoons, and riverine forests. This diverse landscape supports a vast number of animal species, making it one of Africa's most beautiful and ecologically rich reserves. Moremi's history is unique, as it was the first reserve in Africa initiated by a local tribe. In the 1960s, the Batawana people, led by Chief Moremi III's widow, Elizabeth Pulane Moremi, recognized the need to protect the area's dwindling wildlife populations due to hunting and cattle encroachment. The reserve was officially proclaimed in 1963 and named in honor of Chief Moremi III. Over the years, it has been expanded to include Chief's Island and other significant areas, ensuring the preservation of the Okavango Delta's diverse habitats. Today, Moremi is home to a spectacular variety of wildlife, including the Big Five (lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo, and rhino), as well as numerous other species such as wild dogs, cheetahs, giraffes, and a plethora of birdlife. The reserve offers exceptional game viewing opportunities, whether through guided game drives, mokoro excursions (traditional dugout canoes), or walking safaris. Key attractions within Moremi include Chief's Island, known as the "predator capital of the world", Xakanaxa Lagoon, a picturesque area for birdwatching and boat cruises, and the Khwai River, renowned for its diverse wildlife and night drives. Visiting Moremi Game Reserve is an unforgettable experience, offering a chance to immerse oneself in the pristine wilderness of the Okavango Delta and witness the incredible biodiversity of this unique ecosystem.
