Getting There

• 4x4 Vehicle

  To reach Okavango Hidden Gems Camp Maru from any location in Moremi Game Reserve, you will need a 4x4 vehicle due to the rugged terrain. Start from the Moremi Game Reserve entrance. Follow the main dirt road leading south. Keep an eye out for signs directing you towards the southern region of the reserve. After approximately 30 kilometers, you will come across a fork in the road. Take the right fork, which leads towards the Khwai River. Continue on this road for another 20 kilometers until you reach a smaller, less maintained road on your left. This road will take you directly to the Okavango Kopano Mokoro Community Trust area, where Camp Maru is located. The camp is approximately 5 kilometers down this road. Look for the camp signage along the way.

• Mokoro (Traditional Canoe)

  If you are near the Khwai River area and would like a unique experience, consider taking a mokoro trip. You can arrange this through local guides at Khwai. From your current location, head towards the riverbank where mokoro services are offered. The trip to Camp Maru from the river will take about 1-2 hours, depending on the water conditions. Ensure to negotiate the price beforehand, which typically ranges around BWP 300-500 per person. The mokoro will navigate through the beautiful waterways, providing an opportunity to see wildlife along the way.

• Walking

  For the adventurous traveler, walking is an option if you are already in the vicinity of Camp Maru. However, this requires careful planning due to the presence of wildlife. Start your journey from a nearby lodge or campsite and follow the well-trodden paths towards the Okavango Kopano Mokoro Community Trust area. It is crucial to travel in groups and stay alert for any wildlife encounters. Walking distances can vary, so it’s advisable to carry ample water and snacks for the journey. Always inform someone of your plan and expected return time for safety.
