Discover more about Domboshaba

Domboshaba, meaning 'red hill' in Ikalanga, is an evocative historical site that offers a glimpse into Botswana's rich past. The ruins are located near Masunga village in northeastern Botswana and represent a significant settlement from the Great Zimbabwe period. It's believed that the site was occupied towards the end of this era, between 1250 and 1450 AD. Archaeological evidence suggests that Domboshaba was a prominent center for the Kalanga people, serving as both a residence for a local chief and an administrative hub. The chief and his advisors are believed to have lived on the hilltop, while his family resided in the lower areas. The well-preserved dry stone walls, some averaging 1.8 meters in height, outline private enclosures and platforms. Fifteen visible 'dakha' floors mark the locations of former huts. Beyond its function as a residential and administrative center, Domboshaba was also a significant trading post. Artifacts discovered at the site, including gold, copper, ivory, and porcelain from China and India, indicate a vibrant exchange of goods. The presence of grinding stones further supports the notion that Domboshaba was a prominent trading center occupied by Iron Age farmers. Today, Domboshaba is a respected heritage site revered by the local community. Visitors can explore the ruins, imagining life in this ancient hilltop kingdom and appreciating the cultural significance of the site. The surrounding hills, including Mantenge Hill with its perpetually full well, add to the area's natural beauty.
