3.8

Kolobeng Mission, also known as the Livingstone Memorial, offers a glimpse into the life and work of the famous Scottish missionary and explorer, David Livingstone. Established in 1847, this was Livingstone's third and final mission station. Located near Mmankgodi, approximately 25 kilometers west of Gaborone, the site provides a poignant reminder of early encounters between Christianity and local communities in Botswana. Livingstone, along with his wife Mary and their children, aimed to convert the local Bakwena people to Christianity while also providing education and medical assistance. He also sought to improve their living conditions through agriculture and irrigation, introducing new techniques using the nearby Kolobeng River. One of the mission's significant achievements was the conversion of Sechele I, the leader of the Bakwena people. However, the mission faced numerous challenges. A severe drought in 1848 caused tension as traditional rainmaking rituals clashed with Christian beliefs. In 1852, Boer farmers attacked the settlement during the Battle of Dimawe, leading to the mission's abandonment. Today, visitors can explore the remaining foundations of the church, Livingstone's house, and remnants of the irrigation system. A modest grave marks the resting place of Livingstone's infant daughter, Elizabeth. Kolobeng stands as a national monument, preserved by the Department of National Museum and Monuments under Botswana's Ministry of Environment, Wildlife and Tourism. It offers a serene environment for reflection and exploration, inviting visitors to connect with the past and appreciate Botswana's rich history.
