Discover more about Catedral Metropolitana Nossa Senhora Aparecida

The Catedral Metropolitana Nossa Senhora Aparecida, dedicated to Our Lady of Aparecida, the patron saint of Brazil, stands as a powerful symbol of Brasília. Designed by the renowned architect Oscar Niemeyer, it was the first monument to be created in Brasília, with its foundation stone laid on September 12, 1958. The cathedral's structure was completed in 1960, but it officially opened on May 31, 1970. Niemeyer's design features a circular area 70 meters in diameter, from which rise 16 curved concrete columns in a hyperboloid shape, each weighing 90 tons. These columns reach towards the sky, symbolizing hands in prayer. The space between the columns is filled with stained glass windows, designed by Marianne Peretti, that bathe the interior in colorful light. Inside the cathedral, visitors can admire sculptures of three angels suspended from the ceiling, created by Alfredo Ceschiatti. The altar and crucifix add to the spiritual ambiance. The baptistery, with its egg-shaped form and ceramic tiles painted by Athos Bulcão, is another notable feature. The bell tower, a gift from Spain, houses four large bells. The cathedral is located on the Esplanada dos Ministérios and is surrounded by a reflecting pool, which adds to its visual appeal. The four bronze sculptures of the Evangelists, also by Alfredo Ceschiatti, stand in the square outside the entrance. The unique design and historical significance of the Catedral Metropolitana make it a must-visit destination for those exploring Brasília.
