Paranoá Lake: Brasília's Aquatic Heart

Paranoá Lake, inaugurated in 1959, is an artificial reservoir that has become integral to Brasília's identity. The lake was created by damming the Paranoá River, primarily to increase the humidity in the naturally dry region. The idea for a lake in Brasilia was conceptualized by French engineer Auguste François Marie Glaziou in the late 19th century. Today, it spans approximately 48 square kilometers and reaches depths of up to 38 meters.Beyond its functional purpose, Paranoá Lake has evolved into a popular recreational area. Its shoreline is dotted with parks, clubs, and restaurants, offering diverse leisure activities. Water sports enthusiasts can indulge in sailing, kayaking, wakeboarding, and stand-up paddleboarding. Lakeside promenades provide scenic walking and cycling paths, while boat tours offer panoramic views of Brasília's iconic architecture. Fishing is also a common pastime along the lake's shores.One of the lake's intriguing features is the submerged village of Vila Amaury. This village was once inhabited by workers who constructed Brasília, but it was flooded when the dam was completed. Divers can explore the remains of Vila Amaury, offering a unique glimpse into the city's history. The Juscelino Kubitschek Bridge (JK Bridge), an architectural marvel designed by Alexandre Chan, crosses the lake and has become one of the city's most recognizable landmarks. Its design is inspired by a stone skipping across the water.
