Discover more about Santuário São João Bosco

The Santuário São João Bosco, also known as Santuário Dom Bosco, stands as a striking example of modernist architecture blended with spiritual symbolism in the heart of Brasília. Dedicated to Saint John Bosco, an Italian saint who prophesied the city's existence, the sanctuary is a significant landmark and a place of pilgrimage. Designed by architect Carlos Alberto Naves, the church was inaugurated on May 23, 1970, and has since become one of Brasília's seven wonders. The exterior features 80 concrete columns, each 16 meters tall, creating a Gothic-inspired facade. However, the true magic lies within. The interior is bathed in a mesmerizing blue light, thanks to 2,200 square meters of stained glass composed of 7,400 pieces of Murano glass in 12 different shades of blue. These windows, designed by artist Hubert van Doorne, evoke the feeling of being surrounded by a starry sky, with the filtered light creating a unique ambiance that changes throughout the day. At the center of the sanctuary hangs a magnificent chandelier, crafted from 7,400 pieces of Murano glass and weighing 3,000 kg. The church also features bronze doors sculpted by Gianfrancesco Cerri, depicting the life of Dom Bosco, as well as a bronze panel at the baptismal font and an acrylic painting in the tabernacle. In 2017, a crypt was added to house a relic of Dom Bosco – a bone fragment from his right arm – and includes a life-size statue of the saint, offering a space for quiet reflection. The altar is adorned with a simple yet striking crucifix carved from a cedar trunk. Open to visitors daily, the Santuário São João Bosco offers free admission, inviting people of all faiths to experience its beauty and tranquility. Whether seeking spiritual solace or simply marveling at architectural ingenuity, the sanctuary provides an unforgettable experience.
