Discover more about Christ the Redeemer

Christ the Redeemer (Cristo Redentor) is an iconic 30-meter (98 feet) statue of Jesus Christ that stands atop Corcovado Mountain in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Including its base, it reaches a total height of 38 meters (125 feet). With arms outstretched 28 meters (92 feet) wide, the statue symbolizes welcome and peace, and has become emblematic of both Rio de Janeiro and Brazil. The concept for a Christian monument on Corcovado Mountain arose in the 1850s, but the project didn't gain momentum until after World War I. Concerned about a perceived decline in religious faith, the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Rio de Janeiro proposed the statue to reclaim the city for Christianity. Designed by Brazilian engineer Heitor da Silva Costa and sculpted by French artist Paul Landowski, the statue was constructed from reinforced concrete and soapstone between 1922 and 1931. The face was sculpted by Romanian artist Gheorghe Leonida.Visitors can reach the statue via the Corcovado Train, official vans, or by hiking. The train journey is a scenic 20-minute ride through the Tijuca National Park, offering stunning views of the surrounding rainforest. The official vans depart from various points in the city, providing a convenient and comfortable option.Over the years, Christ the Redeemer has undergone several renovations and repairs, including a major project in 2010. In 2006, a chapel dedicated to Our Lady of Aparecida, the patron saint of Brazil, was consecrated at the base of the statue. The statue attracts approximately 2 million visitors annually.
