Álvaro de Carvalho Theater: A Cultural Gem
Experience Florianópolis' rich cultural heritage at the historic Álvaro de Carvalho Theater, showcasing diverse performances in an iconic setting.
The Álvaro de Carvalho Theater (Teatro Álvaro de Carvalho), affectionately known as TAC, is a cherished cultural landmark in Florianópolis, Santa Catarina. Its story began with the laying of its cornerstone on July 29, 1857, originally named Teatro Santa Isabel in honor of Princess Isabel. After eighteen years marked by construction delays due to funding shortages, the theater finally opened its doors on September 7, 1875. In its early years, the theater lacked essential resources, requiring performing companies to cover the costs of lighting and seating. In 1894, as a statement against the abolished monarchy, the building was renamed Teatro Álvaro de Carvalho, paying tribute to the first local playwright. Originally built in a Luso-Brazilian style, the theater underwent renovations throughout the 20th century, adopting eclectic architectural lines. A significant renovation occurred in 1955 under the government of Irineu Bornhausen, with the interior redesigned by engineer-architect Tom Trougott Wildi. Further renovations took place in 1975 and 1984. The theater was designated as a State Heritage site in 1988. Visitors can admire two stained-glass windows depicting popular and folkloric scenes at the entrance to the stairways, and two large canvases by the artist Martinho de Haro in the foyer. The theater has a seating capacity of 470. Throughout its history, the TAC has served various purposes, including a brief period as a prison for Federalist rebels in 1894. Today, the Álvaro de Carvalho Theater continues to host a diverse program of performances, solidifying its place as a vital cultural hub in Florianópolis.
