Mercado Público: The Heart of Florianópolis

The Mercado Público de Florianópolis is more than just a marketplace; it's a living testament to the city's rich history and vibrant culture. From its humble beginnings in the 17th century as a collection of informal stalls along the beach, it has evolved into a cherished landmark that embodies the spirit of Florianópolis.The market's story began long before its physical structure existed, with traders and fishermen selling their goods on the beach in front of what is now Praça XV de Novembro. In 1845, to prepare for a visit from Emperor Dom Pedro II, these stalls were removed with the promise of a more suitable location. The first official market was inaugurated in 1851. The current structure was built in stages, with the first wing completed between 1896 and 1899, and further additions in 1912. A major fire in 2005 destroyed the north wing, which was subsequently rebuilt. In 2016, a modern roof was added to the open central courtyard.Today, the Mercado Público is a bustling hub of activity, offering a wide array of products and experiences. Here, you can find everything from fresh seafood and locally sourced produce to artisanal crafts and traditional snacks. The market is particularly renowned for its seafood, with numerous fishmongers offering the day's catch.
