Palácio Cruz e Sousa: A Glimpse into Santa Catarina's History

Palácio Cruz e Sousa, located in the heart of Florianópolis, is a captivating journey into the history and culture of Santa Catarina. Constructed in the mid-18th century, the building initially served as the seat of the state government. The exterior is adorned with ten allegorical statues crafted by Italian artist Gabriel Silva. The inlaid hardwood floors on the upper level showcase unique patterns in each room, reflecting the artistry of the past.Since 1986, the Palácio Cruz e Sousa has been home to the Historical Museum of Santa Catarina. The museum's collection includes furniture, paintings, documents, and other objects from the 19th and 20th centuries, providing insights into the state's political and social development. One of the museum's notable items is an urn containing the ashes of João da Cruz e Sousa, the Symbolist poet for whom the palace is named. The palace is a protected heritage site, recognized by both the state and the municipality.
